Interviews with Zack

Mrs. Robin Glascock

Assistant Principal Harrison County Middle

Mrs. Glascock's Blog

Zack: Tell me a little information about yourself, such as your family, hobbies, personal interests, ect.

Mrs. Glascock: I was born and raised in Harrison County where I attended Northside Elementary, HCMS, and HCHS.  I graduated from HCHS in 1984 where I moved on to attend Centre College in Danville.  I graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Education and German.  I became employed as a Speech teacher at HCMS in 1990 where I have remained the past 19 years.  In that 19 years, I attended Georgetown College to obtain a Masters of Arts of Education and University of Kentucky where I obtained my Rank I in Administration.  I have two beautiful children who attend schools in Harrison County- one in kindergarten at Eastside Elementary and the other in 9th grade at HCHS.  I have taught 7th grade English, Speech, and even German.  I became Assistant Principal in 2004 and have enjoyed every minute working with the students and faculty in that capacity.

I am currently the HCMS Speech Coach and ESS coordinator at the middle school along with my administrative duties and, honestly, that is what I love to do in my spare time – work with the students in perfecting their performances.  I love coaching speech and working with the students equipping them with a major life skill such as public speaking.  I also love going to a good movie with friends or just spending time with my friends and family.

Zack: Please tell me about any significant experiences you have had while entering your specific field of work.

Mrs. Glascock: When I first became an administrator, I believe my confidence level wasn’t as high as it should have been.  A better way to put that is to say that I was leaving my “COMFORT ZONE” and entering into unknown territory.  This could throw anyone for a loop, but I was fortunate enough to have a great boss and leader.  With his guidance and enthusiasm, Mr. McIntire has helped me in more ways than anyone could possibly imagine.  His strengths were my weaknesses and my strengths were his weaknesses.  He taught me how to focus, “to get things done,” and keep my eyes on the end results.  He taught me how to narrow my focus and establish small, attainable goals.  He gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities.  I have been very fortunate to work for someone who brings out the best in me.  Am I perfect – NO!  Do I make mistakes – YES!    I also believe having Bob Ruth as a co-assistant has been wonderful.  He is quick to help guide me when it comes to experiencing new adventures.  I feel like the administrative team at the middle school works so well together.  I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.  I have learned so much from the two of them, as well as my staff.  I cannot fail to mention the wonderful teachers here at the middle school.  When I became an administrator, I had to realize that although I am not directly teaching students, what I do with my staff greatly influences how well our students achieve.  I have to set a good example for the teachers so that they can learn and grow and see the importance of their impact.  I love working with the teachers in helping them to see how wonderful they are and what they can become. I know that the big CATS testing isn’t EVERYTHING, but it is a great indicator of how well your school is performing our school has been doing a great job.  The teacher’s have everything to do with that and I like to imagine that I have been a small part of that cycle. Our teachers are so focused on helping these students and I am so proud to be a part of that kind of team.

Zack: What specific goals do you hope to accomplish as assistant principal?

Mrs. Glascock: My goals have been very small each year and with the exception of one year, they have been reached.  I wanted to always be the type of administrator who would not ask their staff to do anything I wouldn’t do as an administrator.  I work hard at my job and I expect that of my staff.  Of course every administrator in the state of Kentucky is always focused on results, but results can only come if you put your attention on the needs of your students.  My goal is to work with the teachers in helping them meet the needs of all students.  This is probably the toughest part of the job.  There are many hurdles that must be overcome that we have no control over (i.e. budget, change in curriculum, and change in testing).  I must work with the other administrators in reducing the hurdles.   In the end, my long term goal is making HCMS a top 10 middle school.  The potential is there.   We have been there before and I know we can get there again.

Zack: Are there any specific accomplishments you have made while entering the school system that you are proud of?

Mrs. Glascock: There are so many accomplishments that I am very proud of, some came to me when I taught and others came to me when I became an administrator.  My first year as a teacher/ speech coach, I coached a team to the state speech championship.  The first year that Harrison County has seen a state speech award.  However, my proudest moment came when I was awarded the National Speech and Debate Coach of the year.   I was the first middle school coach in the state of Kentucky to obtain that honor and it truly moved me to be chosen by my peers for such an honor.  I was also overly excited my second year as an administrator to see a huge jump in our testing scores.  With the help of a wonderful boss and many great co-workers, HCMS scores increased immensely.  With the exception of one year, our scores have been on the upswing and I feel honored to be a part of that increase.

Zack: What do you like best about being an assistant principal of Harrison County Middle School?

Mrs. Glascock: I love every minute of working at HCMS, but the thing I love most is the sense of “family” that working with HCMS allows me to feel.  We are all very close and I love working with everyone at the school.  It is just a great place to work.  My job gives me warmth.  I never dread going into work and I love that about HCMS.

Zack: Could you imagine yourself doing anything else not having to do with education? If so what is it?

Mrs. Glascock: Actually, I could never imagine myself doing anything else.  Now, I was once asked, “If my job ended tomorrow and I had to do something else what would it be?”   I had to think long and hard to find something that I would do and be as happy about doing as I am in my current job and the only thing I could think of was that I might enjoy being a talk show host.  You know, like the next Oprah Winfrey.   However, I know I wouldn’t be as happy as I am now.  I love working with teachers, students, parents, and the community.
