Candle Dipping!

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

As part of our study of the early settlers, we learned about many of the things that the settlers had to make for themselves because there were no stores in the New World. One of those things was candles. The only form of light once night fell was the light from the fireplace or the light from a candle. Candles either came from Europe or had to be made in America. Candle dipping was a chore that often fell to the children. We experienced candle dipping today. Our arms got very tired and we only dipped once set of two candles! Here are some pictures of our experience!

Our Kindergarten Feast is fast approaching! We will be preparing our food on Monday morning, November 23rd from approximately 8:45 – 10:45. The actual feast will be held on Tuesday, November 24th at 10:30 am. Please watch for individual requests as well as confirmation of volunteer help which will be coming home Friday, November 13th. We are looking forward to another great experience!

Here is a little poem we have learned this week as we learn about the early settlers and their Native American friends.

The First Thanksgiving

Little Pilgrim dressed in gray

On that first Thanksgiving day.

Little Native dressed in brown,

Came to visit Plymouth Town.

They both came to eat and pray,

On that first Thanksgiving Day.

Spooky Fun!

Book Character Style Show

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

We had five student entries in the Book Character Style Show at Eastside on Friday morning. The characters represented included Peter Pan, Fancy Nancy (two!), the firefighter from Dot the Firedog, and Isabel. Each of our entries were named runners up and won $1.00 gift certificates to be used at Eastside's book fair. In addition, Ms. Caudill entered as the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly and Mrs. Alyssa entered at The Cat in the Hat. Ms. Caudill tied with Mrs. Schmidt (dressed as spaghetti and meatballs) for first place honors in the staff category winning $10.00 for our class towards purchases at the book fair. Thank you Mrs. Hoskins for putting on such a fun Halloween event. We all had a great time!
