August is Already Gone!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

I can't believe we are ending the month of August already.  It doesn't seem like we have been in school that long, but how time flies when you are having FUN!  My students are doing wonderfully, and I can't wait to watch them progress even more.

You should have received a newsletter last Friday in your child's folder but just in case you didn't, we will be reading Pig in a Wig this week.  We will be working on the short i vowel sound and the final x sound.  Our comprehension skill this week will be realism and fantasy as well as working on summarizing a story.

Our spelling words this week will be in, it, did, sit, six, fix, lip, mix, pin, wig, and, take.  Be practicing these nightly for the practice test on Thursday and the regular assessment on Friday.  Our story comprehension and our dictation assessment will also be on Friday.

Have a great week!

Half Way Through……

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Hello to all…..we are halfway through our first week of the reading series.  I am anxious as we begin because I am already seeing progress with my students.  Be looking for your child to bring home their reading book tonight as we are reading the first story, Sam, Come Back! Don't forget to help your child study their spelling words nightly.  We will have a practice test tomorrow and will have a test on Friday.  On Friday, we will also have a comprehension test over our reading story, as we will each Friday. Please remember to sign your child's behavior report as well as any of the paper reading books they will be bringing home throughout the week. Thanks to all you parents/guardians who are helping your child get the most of their education!

Off and Running…..

Monday, August 16th, 2010

As we enter our first full week of school I am tremendously impressed with each of my students.  They have picked up on our classroom procedures much faster than I ever thought they could.  Their patience with learning each of these new procedures will pay off when they become routine and we do not have to practice them anymore!  I can't say enough how happy I am with the progress each of them are making as we are establishing our classroom family.

This week we will be working on reviewing the vowels short a and short e, finding words that have a vowel consonant combination, and practicing rhyming words. We will also discuss sentence structure and what makes a good sentence.  Your child will be bringing home two different books this week as we will be reading Sam on Monday and Tuesday and Bob and Sam on Wednesday and Thursday.

Math lessons will begin this week so be looking for math homework at night from your child.  We have a small spelling list this week also.  Practice test will be on Thursday with the test on Friday.  Anyone who gets a 100% on the practice test WILL NOT have to retake the test on Friday.  Please initial your child's behavior report nightly so I know you are aware of their behaviors at school.

Once again, we had an incredible week last week and I am looking forward to many more.  All my students are wonderful, caring children who I know will always give me their best effort and because of this we will have an exciting year!

What a great day we had yesterday for the first day of First Grade!  All of my students were wonderful and they made my first day a memorable one as well.  They are great kids and I can't wait to spend the year with them.

The rest of this week we will be reviewing our colors and color words with several different activities.  We will also continue working on name recognition and learning our new friends names as well as practicing all those procedures that will allow us to have an incredible year.

Looking forward to the rest of the week and continuing to get to know each one of my students…..
